Tim went home tired from going back and forth to the restaurant and waiting for the police to find out how the money had gone missing from his bag. When he arrived home, he opened the door and went inside. Angelina was in the living room watching television. Tim dropped his bag on the floor and sat down on the couch opposite his wife. He usually sat beside her whenever he returned home from work, but this time he didn’t.

He looked subdued. Angelina winked her eye and looking toward him.

“Welcome honey. You don’t look so good. What’s the matter?

“I had $30,000.00 in my bag last night before I went to the hospital. After you and I came back from the hospital, I picked up the handbag and went straight to work. But when I got to work and was ready to fill out the deposit slip, I opened the bag to put the slip inside together with the money, but found out, to my greatest dismay, that the money is missing.”

“Really?”

She was relaxed and unperturbed about the whole incident. She picked up the glass of red wine she was drinking and took a little sip. The cup of wine was half-filled.

“Yes,” Tim replied.

“How did that happen?”

“I have no idea whatsoever.”

“Did you go back to the restaurant where you purchased the said meal to check if by accident you left the bag open and it fell off the ground or somewhere else?”

“Yes, I did. I went back there. I got the police involved. I had to get the cops involved because the manager wouldn’t allow me to view the security camera footage, because it is a violation of their company rules and procedures. The police came and we viewed the footage together, but no one had even gone near it.”

“This sounds like a mystery to me. Are you sure you kept the money in the bag? Maybe you thought you did, but perhaps you never actually did. This whole thing sounds so silly to me.”

“I am very sure the money was in the bag. This is my usual way of doing things, and something like this has never happened to me before. This is the first time I’ve experienced something like this.”

Angelina picked up the glass of wine and took another sip.

“Well, there’s always a first time for everything, and like you said, this is your first: perhaps, you can learn from this.”

Tim sat back quietly but Angelina continued.

“Let me see that bag anyway.”

Tim handed the bag to her. She stood up and looked at it with a somewhat stubborn look in her face.

“This bag doesn’t even have a lock. It’s just a briefcase. Tim, how can you be so stupid to leave money in a bag like this without a common lock? This is crazy. Did you even ask your workers, especially Monica, that secretary of yours? Perhaps they may have an idea where the money is or who stole it. This looks like an inside job to me.”

“My secretary and I have worked together since I first started my business more than ten years ago.
